Funding: Adaptation Fund through NEMA

Location: Kwale, Kilifi and Taita Taveta County

Goal: Building resilience and adaptive capacity to climate change for vulnerable communities in Kenya

Project Components:

• Improving climate-resilient water management systems
• Increase resilience to climate change of Shoreline and Mangrove ecosystems in Kenyan coastal zone.

Achievements:

  • 1 water pan constructed in Midoina, Kilifi
  • 5 ferrocement water tanks constructed in 5 schools
  • 5 sites identified and 284979 mangroves seedlings (75Ha) planted in Gazi and Vanga mangrove ecosystem between 2017-2022
  • Mapping of coral reef and sea grass completed and report published
  • Coral Reef Restoration Protocol published
  • Coral and Seagrass transplanted, Monitoring and data recording undertaken in Wasini CCA
  • Shoreline stabilization work completed at Mwaembe beach, Msambweni
  • Training of Coxswain conducted and patrol boat purchased and handed over to KFS

Implementation Status:

• Current Status: Implementation by CDA is completed, activities directly implemented by NEMA is ongoing
• Implementation Level: 100% CDA activities, 60% NEMA activities
